VA Tech Haiku

Cellphones, still alive,
ringing in victims' pockets –

You manage to say so much in just those few words, the sadness of the needless deaths, the way technology seems to take over.

I remember when a woman was stranger-raped outside my residence hall in the early 80s, and I learned about it from a note taped to the dorm door when I returned from stage crew at 11:30 pm. There would have been no way to reach me in the bowels of the theatre building. Your haiku touchs me most in its reminder that some students were carrying the perfect means of fast communication -- if only it had been used effectively.

I love the last line. Unanswerable. It speaks to so much of what has happened.
