I don't get it when people complain about things they can't do anything about. (Saying that I don't get something is not the same as complaining, is it?)
I also don't get it when people complain about things instead of doing something about them.
I am completely confused by daylight savings time and flying into another time zone. I mean, I can draw a picture of it, with the sun and the earth in proper proportions and relation to each other, and understand it, and even explain it to my kid, but as soon as I fold the paper back up? Gone.
I am confounded by parents who profess to place their child's happiness above all else, but who can't seem to get themselves to be quiet long enough to listen and learn about what might possibly bring their child happiness.
I don't get it when someone tries to reason someone else out of their fear. Don't they know from their own life that fear isn't rational, and is therefore impervious to reason?
I don't understand why Americans stand for a system that leaves 47 million of us medically uninsured. I have friends who are uninsured, and who are therefore one accident away from financial ruin. Many of us are one short step away from being uninsured. I don't know why that vulnerability hasn't generated more energy and urgency.
I wish I could grasp the mechanics behind our understanding of war as a necessary evil, and peace as an impossible dream.
I don't get people who are eligible to vote, but don't.
I am confounded by the challenge of trying to explain things to my son that I don't understand myself.
(But that doesn't keep me from trying.

You make some excellent points. In the UK we have free healthcare for all with no insurance. I wonder why America doesn't?

I liked a lot of these, especially the one about listening to your children to find out what might actually make them happy.
I'm going to comment on one in particular. I've never been a telemarketer, nor have I called someone in the middle of dinner to pitch one scam or another, but I did work at a call center once, so I have some insight into that world. What I did was to call across the country to various cities, asking people if they'd be interested in answering some questions for a market research movie survey. That was it! We weren't selling anything, weren't asking for money. Anyway, in general, people were just incredibly rude and awful to us because they assumed we were telemarketers. It got to the point where I actually had to quit my job because I couldn't handle going to work knowing that I would be berated non-stop for an eight hour stretch. There were people I was working with who needed this job to pay for school, rent, etc. Basically, the only way to succeed was to cut yourself off from your emotions. If you can genuinely not care about people cursing and yelling and making personal verbal attacks, then good on ya, work at a call center.
Now, I'm not saying that you should listen to everything any telemarketer has to say, but at the very least, be polite about saying you're not interested, or just hang up the phone gently when you'd rather not listen. Just remember that they are people, too.
Sorry about the rant. I really did enjoy your post, and I hope nobody thinks I was directing this at any particular person; I just meant it as something to think about in general.

Voter apathy, and people's fear to discuss politics leaves me baffled too. What are people so afraid of in America? This is a young country that was created out of revolution. You would never know it by the lack of political discourse today.
I like almost everything you've said, but especially the points you make about health care and voter apathy. I don't get it either!

i am with you on all of these counts... and i will admit i do not vote never have.. i do not because i do not believe in rewarding bad behavior,, i am not willing to settle for the lesser of two evils and i have never found a politician that i felt was worthy of my ultimate trust,, and that is what it would take to get me to vote for them...
This is a great post. I agree 100%, even with the ones that I am guilty of! Like complaining about things I can't do anything about. :) Agreeing and still doing it--does that make me a hypocrite? lol. You have some great thoughts, keep sharing them with the world--keep blogging!

I do not get any of these things and more, especially when it comes to politics and religion. Please don't misunderstand, I love the Lord with all my heart, but I can not give organized religion the time of day. And politics and politicians - well there isn't a well deep enough to drown them all in! LOL Great post - please stop by and for a visit.
