Lice Alert

This just in from Mr. D's little neighborhood school:
Just wanted to give you a "heads up" about taking lice precautions as a few cases are in the school. Although we have none in our class yet, we do have to share the same carpeted areas in the music room and library and some students have siblings. If your child has long hair, please put it in braids or ponytails. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.
Swell. Wish his hair was long enough to have some fun with this. And I know it's great to be comfy during circle time and all that, but seriously? I don't think my elementary school had a scrap of carpet in the place. Hmmm....

Lice is one of my all-time major freakout issues. At our grammar school the nurse (also the secretary, teacher, lunch lady...) used to take a toothpick and scrape through our scalps looking for six legged friends. I hated it.

In case you need the information, the best way to get rid of the little buggers is to let the child sleep with thick crisco on his head, under a swimming cap. They have become immune to the insecticides that are sold, but nothing can become immune to smothering. Since the eggs can take up to 10 days to hatch, it is a good idea to do this for ten days.

The image of D with pigtails has me LOL. Hope the contents of the box are being enjoyed!

my kids have had lice a few times in the past 3 years, even giving them to me. after i got freaked out about dolloping chemicals on their heads, i found an alternative treatment called Delacet. I could only get it from an online candle shop in the UK (somethingforthewickend.com), and the shipping costs were a killer, but I recommend it if your son comes home with critters.
of course it's always better to have something on hand BEFORE it happens...

Despite the inconvenience, it would be great for Halloween.

Yikes. We also received a note home, thought not as "punny." So far, knock on wood, we haven't had to deal with it. But the notes come home each year.

Yuck.
